The flexible impeller pump working principle consists of a rotating rubber impeller with supple vanes attached that maintain contact with the pump inner walls. As the casing is actually smaller than the vanes, they must bend and then straighten as the impeller turns to conform to shape of the pump internal walls. A flexible impeller pump is a different pumping technology, positive displacement. This means the pump prevents liquid recirculating in the pump head and back towards the inlet. Its pumping motion is always forward, or positive, as opposed to centrifugal pumps where fluid can recirculate back towards the inlet. The flexing of the impeller vanes is controlled by a cam (an eccentricity) in the pump body between the inlet and discharge openings, and by the thickness, material and configuration of the vanes themselves. The placement of the cam causes each vane to flex as it moves over the discharge. The pump can operate bi-directionally.
